The Risk Of Moving vs. The Risk of Not MovingShould you stay, or should you go? It’s the most basic question to consider when thinking about making a job change. In our experience speaking to candidates about considering or pursuing a new opportunity, most candidates are naturally concerned about the risk of moving to a new, less familiar company/position/job situation. However, they rarely think about the risk of not moving, especially the risk of staying in a situation that doesn’t allow you to further develop your capabilities or build your achievements?
The Biggest Risk To Your Career Is Not ImprovingIn today’s world, words like guarantees, stability, predictable, and certainty do not define many situations, whether that’s economies, industries, or companies. Instead, what describe the realities we face today are words like change, development, competition, and uncertainty.
As such, the biggest risk to your career is staying in a situation that doesn’t help you improve and grow as quickly as others in the market. In this type of situation, while you may not feel that you’re getting worse as time goes by, relative to many others who are improving and getting better, you’re actually getting worse and less competitive.
For instance, I meet many candidates who are in job situations they don’t feel offers them enough chances to develop and grow. They’re very familiar with and comfortable in their situation, and know things aren’t likely to change much. Yet, while they feel they may be missing out on opportunities and falling behind in their career development, they’re still afraid to pursue a change that could improve their situation.
Does Your Situation Allow You To Grow? While there are definite risks involved in making any move, at least there’s also the upside and potential that your new situation can be much better than your current one. So you should ask yourself, “Is the bigger risk to my career in making a move to a new situation, or in remaining where I am now?”
Making a job move is a serious consideration that’s based on how you feel about your situation. Mainly, is it one that continues to provide you with development opportunities and challenges that allow you to grow and improve? Does it allow you to stay competitive and attractive in today’s job market?
Moving into any new company or position involves risk. The key to assessing that risk is to understand not just the position you’re considering, but also the company, management leadership, competitive advantages/strengths, resources, importance, urgency, etc. of the new situation you’re considering. Although thoroughly assessing all these aspects of a new situation still can’t produce any guarantees for you, it’s how you minimize your risk when looking at a new opportunity.
