Avoid Long-Term Damage To Your Career From Job Hopping

Job hopping, or being identified by potential employers as a job hopper, is something that you definitely want to avoid in your career.  For instance, I remember reviewing the resume of one candidate who was 28 years old and already seeking his fourth job.  His resume looked terrible.  While he had attracted reasonably good positions up to this point in his career, you really had to wonder about his ability to continue to attract good opportunities with top companies in the future.  You had to question how bright his career prospects looked in general with a track record that immediately raised a lot of concerns.  For someone still at such an early stage in his career, he had quickly reached a point where his stability, commitment, and career objectives were all in question.

There’s Always Another Attractive Opportunity Out There

Actually, changing jobs frequently is quite common in China, where capable people are able to attract good opportunities.  For those with strong education backgrounds and decent work experience, there’s always another position out there that pays higher.  And there are always other jobs that sound more exciting and attractive given the growth and investment many multinationals in this market.  The result of such movement, however, can be extremely damaging to your career in the long run.

Impacts Your Ability To Deliver Substantial Results

One CEO for a major food services company in China has straightforward advice to young mainland professionals for developing their career, “Focus on building solid business skills and on acquiring know-how.  Become well-rounded and constantly expand your comfort zone of capabilities.

“I see many mainlanders though go from one position to the next for incremental salary increases every year or two.  It’s short-sighted.  You should think about what the resume of a top executive who makes a lot of money looks like.  They get to where they are by showing they can build something significant and get substantial results.  That takes at least 3-5 years to do in most situations.

“As a result, don’t make career decisions based on what you can get now.  You need to remember that your career will last for 30 years, or even longer.  What does a few thousand RMB more a month mean now compared to what you could make one day if you’re able to become a senior executive for a leading company?  More important is to consider how much you can grow in each opportunity and to always show your performance before moving on.”

Staying with one company for more than just a year or two also improves your ability to get results in the company you’re with, especially in large multinationals with both China and global operations.  Not only does your knowledge of how to get things done in the company grow over time, others in the company also become more familiar with you and your abilities, making it easier to get the support you need to do your job well.

Hard To Be Seen As A Solid, Highly Capable Person By Others

The longer your career progresses, the more your background should reflect a solid, consistent story where others are able to see the accumulation of well-rounded capabilities, strong results and achievements, and solid experience and expertise.  That’s very difficult to do when you’re changing jobs every 1-2 years.  Beyond raising concerns about your overall commitment and maturity, that’s just not enough time to achieve anything very significant that will give top employers the confidence that you can take on key roles and responsibilities.
