Prioritize Experience Over Money Early In Your Career

One executive I know is very clear when advising young professionals on how to evaluate a new position early in your career.  “When considering a new job, you should find a position that helps build your competencies and experience, “she says.  “Next, consider the quality of a company situation or position. The final consideration should be salary.  Unfortunately, too many young mainland professionals prioritize jobs in the opposite order.”

What Kind Of Job/Situation Will Benefit Your Career The Most?

Similarly, I always tell candidates that if money really matters to you, then you should pay attention most to how much you can make during the course of your career, and not just right now.  I point out to them that the difference in salary that you make later in your career if you’re able to reach higher level roles and if you’re able to get there sooner will far outweigh whatever you may give up today in choosing a job situation that can help you to grow nd develop faster.  As a result, when considering a job, try not to place the money aspect above all other considerations.

Employers Are Investing In Your Situation Too

One candidate that we introduced to a sales management position in a leading multinational packaged goods company was unable to do this, and regretted it afterwards.  This candidate had a very strong marketing background.  Although she had no sales experience, the client liked her intelligence and energy.  The position offered her a chance to learn a new job function, prove herself in a revenue-generating role, and add a valuable element to her career development.

It was just the opportunity she was looking for.  Before the interview, I gave the candidate the compensation range for the position and told her that I thought it was a fair amount for her level of experience.  I also emphasized that the position offered her an exceptional chance to acquire business development, profit & loss, and management experience.  The candidate acknowledged her compensation expectations and priority to find a position that offered the type of promising, attractive career track she was targeting.

The interview went well and it became clear the client was very interested.  At the end of the meeting, however, the candidate couldn’t resist returning to her view of her value as a marketing professional.  Thinking she was gaining the upper hand, she told the client she was only interested in the position if it offered a higher salary.  In her mind, she felt the company should pay her a premium if she was going to give up her current situation for one that would result in a major change in her career.

It was a “what can you do for me” attitude that reflected both a lack of commitment towards her move and unrealistic assessment of her experience and value relative to the opportunity.  The client was willing to give the candidate the chance if the candidate was willing to share the risk.  But they weren’t interested in paying a premium for someone who was untested in her ability to run a key part of his business.  Not surprisingly, the client’s interest in the candidate ended right there.

The Way To Make More Money In Your Career

While it’s natural to be attracted to an opportunity that offers more money, your ability to go higher in your career, attain your career objectives, and eventually make more money overall is based on the capabilities and experience you can develop and offer over your career.  So while money matters, in the long run you’ll make more of it by choosing job opportunities early in your career that can build the kind of value and achievements that others are willing to pay more for.
