Be Flexible And Realistic When Making Big Career Changes

Many mid-career mainland professionals approach us to express their desire to change their job function or industry.  They may have entered their current industry long ago expecting something quite different, or joined a company for no other reason than its well-recognized name.  Some are accountants who want to become consultants, engineers who want to pursue a business role, or sales professionals who want to do marketing.  At some point, they’ve come to the realization that they’re not very satisfied with or are no longer interested in the job or line of business they’re in.

Don’t Let Your Ego Get In Your Way

The problem for many is that while they want to make a significant career change, they don’t want to take a step back in their career to do it.  They expect others to value them in the same way that their current situation does, even if they’re entering a new job function or industry that they have very little experience or no proven track record in.  They’re unable to recognize that a lot of the value and achievements they’ve built up to this point in their career do not fully apply the new role they’re pursuing.  As a result, they’re never able to find a suitable opportunity in the career track that they really want to pursue, and end up continuing to do something that they don’t enjoy or are not really interested in.

But if you feel there’s another function or industry you’re better suited for or can be more successful in, then you may need to be realistic and initially take a lower title or position of less responsibility in order to get into a situation you’re more interested in.  As such, be flexible and consider temporarily taking one step back so you can move two steps forward later on.  Once you’re in the right situation and have a chance to do what you’re more interested in, then you can show your new employer what you can do and begin catching up to your previous level of responsibility.

Be Confident In Your Ability To Show Your Performance

One of our company’s former recruitment consultants is a great example of someone who was very realistic and flexible in the career change she was making.  Before joining our company, she was an account manager with a leading global equipment manufacturer.  But because she had absolutely no recruitment or talent industry experience, I could only hire her as a Sr. Associate, a position that was two levels lower than her current level.  I told her though that I thought she had all the skill sets to be a highly successful recruitment consultant, and that she could reach that level very quickly on our platform.  If she was really committed to entering our industry and confident enough in her capabilities, then all she needed to do was show her performance.  If she could do that, then she would get all the opportunity she could handle.

While most people might not be able to accept such a situation, she was very clear about what she wanted to pursue and confident in abilities.  Within six months, she was promoted to consultant and became our top performer by the end of her first year.

In The Right Situation, You’ll Soon Recover Whatever You Lost

When making a major career change, there’s an initial learning curve you need to go up.  In addition to the risk you’re taking in making such a move, there’s also a significant risk factor to an employer in giving you the chance to do something that you don’t have a track record doing.  If you can lower that risk for them, then there’s a greater likelihood they’ll give you the opportunity you seek to prove yourself.

If you really have confidence in your abilities, then show a little patience in reaching your objective of being successful in the new job function or industry you wish to enter.  Demonstrate your performance to other in this new situation.  If you’re as good as you think you are then you should be able to quickly prove your value.  And in a reasonable amount of time you should be able to close the gap between where you were previously in your career to reach the same level of responsibility in your new situation.
