Basic Factors To Assess For Any New Job Opportunity

Early in your career, it’s especially important to place yourself into a good development situation.  However, the quality of work environments in China and what they offer vary greatly.  So finding a company and position that provides you good opportunities to learn and grow, and where you’ll be under the leadership and guidance of strong professionals is critical.  You can’t simply assume that every multinational or situation in a company is a great place for your development just because they offer you a position that sounds attractive.  You can’t just think that the bigger or more famous the better.

Good Questions To Ask About A New Opportunity

Instead, you need to thoroughly assess each individual company and job situation on its own.  For instance, when considering a new position, there are several very basic, but important factors that you always want to pay attention to and assess when considering a new opportunity.  These include:

  • Who are the people you’ll work under and learn from, and what is your level of access and interaction with them (e.g. daily, weekly, occasionally, etc.)?
  • What is the scope of responsibilities that the job offers, and how important are they to the success of the department or company you’ll be joining?
  • What kind of resources and processes are already in place to support you?
  • What other internal and external areas of the company and its business does the position expose you to?
  • What new capabilities and expertise will you develop from this new opportunity?
  • Will the experience you gain provide you with a strong foundation for your further career development?
  • What’s the likelihood you’ll perform successfully in the position?

Beyond assessing just the position, you should also consider the overall company situation you’ll be joining.  For instance:

  • What is the department’s/company’s commitment to further growing its business in this market?
  • Is the department’s/company’s operation in China an established or start-up one?
  • What’s the company’s current position within its industry (e.g. industry leader, Top 3/5/10 player, niche player, etc.)?
  • What’s the company’s current development stage (e.g. fast growth, slow growth, mature, surviving, etc.)?

There are many aspects of a new job opportunity that can impact the quality of the experience and benefits that you’ll get out of it.  However, the above are some good, fundamental questions that will help you to better assess any opportunity or new employment situation.  If these areas look promising to you, then you can be more confident that you’ll be making a good choice and move for your career.  While the internet is providing everyone with much easier access to new employment opportunities, ultimately, it’s up to you to sort out the quality and realities of all the job postings and job information that you come across and that are attractive to you.
