A Mature Career Mindset Required For Today’s Job-Seekers

In China today, the buyer beware mindset applies as much to the job-seeker side as it does to the hiring side.  Meaning, when presented with a new opportunity, you need to be much more accountable and thorough in determining what a new role and company can provide you.  Frankly, there are many companies and employment situations in this market that aren’t nearly as good as what they appear on the surface.  For many years, China’s hot market conditions provided highly favorable conditions for many businesses to succeed.  However, the maturing business environment is now revealing which ones are the stronger and weaker, short-lived and more sustainable platforms out there.

Greater Emphasis On Career Development Factors

Fortunately, more and more, the candidates we work with are recognizing that capturing greater opportunities revolves around their ability to identify strong employment platforms that can allow them to accumulate solid capabilities and achievements, rather than chasing opportunistic situations that may offer quick promotions and pay raises, but are short-lived.  We see this more mature approach to career development in the way many candidates respond to the opportunities we introduce to them now.  Instead of how much it will pay, what they want to know about most is how the new opportunity and company will add to their professional development and future success, what their potential for growth is, and the quality of the resources, environment, and people they’ll be a part of.  This longer-term, career development orientation is a far cry from the “show me the money” one that many mainland professionals expressed to us a few years ago.

Dangerous To Chase Short-Term Benefits

Increasingly, job-seekers in China are feeling just how dangerous it is to only look at the short-term benefits of an opportunity that may offer them salary and title jumps.  Mainly, they encounter hiring attitudes among employers that are much more thorough and selective than before.  If the opportunities you choose don’t end up being solid, and the scenario repeats itself where you need to change jobs every 1-2 years, then you can do serious damage to your career.  Where you could get away with job-hopping in the past and easily pursue other platforms if one didn’t work out, employers are much more critical of such moves today.

What You Want To Be Seen As Is Solid And Credible

“These days, you have to be more mature and realistic about how you approach your career,” says a young professional in Shanghai.  “Before, I used to only be attracted to opportunities that offered the fastest and highest upside, but didn’t even pay attention to ones that didn’t offer an immediate upside.  But that’s not how I am today.

“One of the first things new employers want to know from you now is why you left your previous job and why you want to join their company.  You have to give them solid, credible answers, especially if they’ve seen that you’ve moved around a few times already.  They pay a great deal of attention to the quality of your achievements and to what you’ve done that’s turned out successfully.  That’s hard to talk about if you’ve only stayed in a job situation for one or two years.

From a career development perspective the ability to differentiate the quality of an employment situation and opportunity has a huge impact on how successfully you’re able pursue and attain your career objectives.  Just as employers are digging farther below the surface to determine what you have to offer, so should you when it comes to evaluating an employment situation you’re thinking of placing yourself into.
